Enter the relief

October 13, 2014

The heat and humidity was hanging on and we thought it would never end.  Then there was relief this morning in the form of a nice shower and cold front.  How many times are there situations in life that we think will never end?  We keep waiting and hoping for the cold front to ease the situation and bring relief.  Sometimes the situation is so hard that it just feels rigid and unmovable.

I think that during those unmovable times is where we need to have very deep roots in order to persevere.  It is a challenge to find the time to create spiritual space for ourselves on a daily basis.  We have so many commitments and responsibilities.  However, if we can just carve out some time on some sort of regular schedule then the times of difficulty will be eased somewhat.

Regular spiritual practice does not erase the difficult times or serve to prevent difficulties, but regular practice will serve to ease the pain a bit and increase our ability to persevere.

Expectations

September 7, 2014

I know I have written before about letting go.  Specifically I want to write about letting go of expectations.  Let’s talk about people caring or not caring.  I know if I make the statement, “People don’t care”, there will be an uproar.  But, they really don’t.  Let me explain.  When I say that people don’t care I think I really mean that I cannot expect people to care.  This is a neutral position.  This is truly letting go of expectations.  People either care or they don’t and there is much gray area in between those two poles.  In fact, I doubt there is anyone alive who doesn’t care about something.  We all care about something.

“People don’t care” really just means that they don’t care about what I need for them to care about.  They don’t fulfill my expectations of them.  This is the letting go.  There is great freedom in letting go of expectations.

“But I have to expect certain things of certain people.”  Do you?  Do you really?

What to do

And what not to do

How do we know?  From where comes the guidance?

Is there a still place in your soul?  Do you know?  Where is the stillness?  Think of a pool of water in an old growth forest.  It is completely undisturbed until the rain falls.  Drip, drip, drip.  The slow falling of the rain.  The water being disturbed.  Not a downpour really, but just drip, dripping.  Perhaps the drips are the inspiration.  The inspiration falling gently into the previously undisturbed pool.

Can you be still and notice?  Notice the dripping, notice the subtlety.

Be still and know……

Internal Joy

August 11, 2014

I am thinking this morning about all the strife in the world.  We must find internal joy.  We must also find those very select external things that bring us joy.  We are smothered with information and choices.  How do we choose from such an overwhelming abundance of opportunities?

I think the only way to choose wisely is to choose from an inner place.  We must choose from a balanced place of using heart and head.  If we always choose from the heart our decisions may be to emotional and not really the best thing for us.  If we always choose from the head our decisions may be completely rational and lacking any real spirit or connection to our souls.

How do we find this inner place?  We need to have some type of practice that will allow some space in our day to listen.  We need to listen to whatever voice or longing that speaks to us.  I urgently believe that we can only listen when we are quieted.  It may just be five minutes a day if that is all you think you can spare.  Eventually, I would guess, that the five minutes will turn into twenty or thirty minutes.

I invite you to fall in love with silence.  Silence is the waiting, willing, and patient lover.
